Front Driveshaft. Repair procedures

Removal
  
•
Be careful not to damage the parts located under the vehicle (floor under cover, fuel filter, fuel tank and canister) when raising the vehicle using the lift.
(Refer to General Information - "Lift and Support Points")
1.
Loosen the wheel nuts slightly.
Raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2.
Remove the front wheel and tire (A) from the front hub.
Tightening torque :
107.9 - 127.5 N.m (11.0 - 13.0 kgf.m, 79.6 - 94.0 lb-ft)
  
•
Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when removing the front wheel and tire (A).

3.
Loosen the driveshaft caulking nut (A) from the front hub.
Tightening torque :
294.2 - 313.8 N.m (30.0 - 32.0 kgf.m, 217.0 - 231.5 lb-ft)

  
•
The driveshaft lock nut (A) should be replaced with new ones.
•
After installation driveshaft lock nut, stake the lock nut using a chisel and hammer as shown in the illustration below.
Caulking depth : 1.5 mm (0.591 in.)

4.
Remove the split pin and nut (A).
Tightening torque:
98.0 - 117.6 N.m (10.0 - 12.0 kgf.m, 72.3 - 86.7 lb-ft)

5.
Remove the tie rod end ball joint (A) using the SST (09568-2J100).

6.
Remove the split pin and nut (A).
Tightening torque:
98.0 - 117.6 N.m (10.0 - 12.0 kgf.m, 72.3 - 86.7 lb-ft)

7.
Remove the lower arm from the knuckle by using the SST (09568-4R100).
(1)
Install the support bolt (A) from lower arm bolt hole.
(2)
Install the support body (B) from front axle.
(3)
Tighten the bolt (C).

8.
Remove the drive shaft (A) from the front axle assembly (B).

9.
Remove the driver side drive shaft (B) using the pry bar (A).

  
•
Use a pry bar being careful not to damage the transaxle and joint.
•
Do not insert the pry bar too deep, as this may cause damage to the oil seal.
•
Do not pull the driveshaft by excessive force it may cause components inside the joint kit to dislodge resulting in a torn boot or a damaged bearing.
•
Plug the hole of the transaxle case with the oil seal cap to prevent contamination.
•
Support the driveshaft properly.
•
Replace the retainer ring whenever the driveshaft is removed from the transaxle case.
10.
Rmove the passenger side driveshaft after loosening the inner shaft mounting bolts (A).
Tightening torque:
49.0 - 68.6 N.m (5.0 - 7.0 kgf.m, 36.2 - 50.6 lb-ft)

Installation
1.
To install, reverse the removal procedures.
2.
Check the alignment.
(Refer to Suspension System - "Alingment")

Dynamic Damper. Repair procedures

Removal
1.
Remove the front drive shaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")
2.
Remove the trans axle side joint.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Transaxl Joint")
3.
Remove the dynamic damper band (A, B) using driver (-).

  
•
When removing the dynamic damper, lubricate the shaft with soapy water to prevent shaft damage.
4.
Remove the dynamic damper (A).

Installation
1.
Install the dynamic damper (A).

  
•
When installing the dynamic damper, install it in set with the mounting part (A) of the shaft.
2.
Install the dynamic damper band (A) using SST (09495-39100).

3.
Install the transaxle side joint.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Transaxl Joint")
4.
Install the front driveshaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")

Joint Assembly (Transaxle side). Repair procedures

Removal
  
•
Drive shaft joints require special grease, so do not add any other type of grease.
•
When replacing the boot band, it must be a new one.
1.
Remove the front drive shaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")
2.
Remove the transaxle side large diameter (A) and small diameter (B) boot bands.

  
•
Use the right tool for each type of boot band as shown in the table below.
Ear type
Hook type

•
When using the low profile hook type boot band, fit the SST tip (B) into the boot band hole (A) as shown below.

3.
Remove the trans axle joint housing (A).

4.
Remove the snap ring (A) using a snap ring pliers.

5.
Remove the spider assembly (A) from the drive shaft using a puller.

6.
Remove trans axle side boot (A).

7.
Clean the inside of the spider assembly and joint housing.
  
•
Remove grease inside the housing as much as possible.
Inspection
1.
Check spline (A) for damage / wear / crack.

2.
Check the boot for water or foreign objects.
3.
Check joint assembly for damage / wear / crack and rust.
4.
Replace any defective parts.
Installation
  
•
When assembling, be careful not to let dust and foreign substances enter.
•
Driveshaft joints require special grease, so do not add any other type of grease.
•
Boot bands must use the new one.
1.
Install the transaxle side boot (A) and boot band (B) on the driveshaft.
  
•
Put the boot band (B) first on the drive shaft before installing the boot (A).

  
•
When installing the boot, seats in the mounting part (A).

2.
Install the spider assembly (A) on the shaft (B), then press it using a mallet.

  
•
When installing the spider assembly (A), install it in the correct direction.
•
Installing in the wrong direction can cause secondary quality problems.

•
When installing the spider assembly, install it according to the boot shape.

3.
Install the snap ring (A) using the snap ring pliers.

  
•
When replacing the joint assembly, use the new one provided in the joint kit.
•
The snap ring must be new.
•
After installing the snap ring, make sure that there are only 2 - 3 splines in position (A).

4.
Apply specified grease inside the joint housing (A) and boot (B).

  
•
Use the grease provided with the joint/boot kit.
•
Apply about 70% grease to the housing (A) and about 30% grease to the boot (B).
•
Driveshaft joints require special grease, so do not add any other type of grease.
5.
Install the trans axle side joint housing (A).

  
•
When installing the housing, turn the boot to fit each other.
•
If the shape of housing and boot does not fit, there is a possibility of leakage due to the gap. Be very careful.

6.
Adjust the air inside the boot to normal as shown below.

•
After installing the joint housing, perform air bleeding by pressing it several times until no air is heard.
7.
Install the transaxle side joint large diameter (A) and small diameter (B) boot band.

•
Install in the following order: large diameter boot band → small diameter boot band.
•
Installing in the wrong order can cause leaks.
•
When installing the ear type boot band, check the clearance (A) as shown below.
Clearance (A) : 2.0 mm or less.

•
When using the low profile hook type boot band, fit the SST tip (B) into the boot band hole (A) as shown below.

8.
Install the front driveshaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")

Joint Assembly (Wheel side). Repair procedures

Removal
The type can replace the wheel side joint boot
1.
Remove the front drive shaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")
2.
Remove the trans axle side joint.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Transaxl Joint")
3.
Remove the dynamic damper.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Dynamic Damper")
4.
Remove the wheel side joint small diameter (A) and large diameter (B) boot band using driver (-).

5.
Remove the wheel side joint boot (A).

  
•
Do not remove the wheel side joint housing (A).
•
Reinstall the wheel side joint housing (A) may cause leakage, so replace it with the shaft (B) as an assembly.

The type can not replace the wheel side joint boot
1.
Remove the front drive shaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")
2.
Remove the trans axle side joint.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Transaxl Joint")
3.
Remove the dynamic damper.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Dynamic Damper")
4.
Replace the wheel side joint assembly (A) and shaft (B).

  
•
The wheel side joint boot can not be replaced, so replace the wheel side joint assembly (A) and shaft (B) together as an assembly.
Inspection
1.
Check the boot for water or foreign objects.
2.
Replace any defective parts.
Installation
The type can replace the wheel side joint boot
  
•
When assembling, be careful not to let dust and foreign substances enter.
•
Driveshaft joints require special grease, so do not add any other type of grease.
•
Boot bands must use the new one.
1.
Install the new boot (A) in the direction of the arrow.

2.
Apply the grease specified inside the boot.

  
•
Use the grease provided with the joint/boot kit.
•
Apply about 50 - 60% grease inside the boot.
•
Driveshaft joints require special grease, so do not add any other type of grease.
3.
Install the wheel side boot (A) into the housing (B).

4.
Install the large diameter boot band (B) using SST (0K495-C5000).
Clearance (A) : 2.0 mm or less.

5.
Install the small diameter boot band (B) using SST (0K495-C5000).
Clearance (A) : 2.0 mm or less.

6.
Install the dynamic damper. [If equipped]
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Dynamic Damper")
7.
Install the transaxle side joint.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Joint Assembly(Transaxle side)")
8.
Install the front drive shaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")
The type can not replace the wheel side joint boot
  
•
When assembling, be careful not to let dust and foreign substances enter.
•
Driveshaft joints require special grease, so do not add any other type of grease.
•
Boot bands must use the new one.
1.
Replace the wheel side joint assembly (A) and shaft (B).

  
•
The wheel side joint boot can not be replaced, so replace the wheel side joint assembly (A) and shaft (B) together as an assembly.
2.
Remove the dynamic damper.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Dynamic Damper")
3.
Install the transaxle side joint.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Joint Assembly(Transaxle side)")
4.
Install the front drive shaft.
(Refer to Driveshaft Assembly - "Front Driveshaft")
